Three years ago, Megan's Law warned us when a Registered Sexual Predator (Twice convicted of crimes against children) moved into our neighborhood. Quite frankly, we were devastated. How do we tell our children without terrifying them? We had a neighborhood meeting with our Sheriff to get all the information we needed. He told us all to be vigilant in keeping our kids safe. We printed the photo and hung it on our fridge for our kids to know who he was. We showed our kids his house and told them to stay away. Our daughter didn't want to sleep upstairs in her room anymore because she was afraid, she would have nightmares, so we installed motion lights and a security system. We did everything that Megan’s Law stands for!
Imagine our surprise when we see this Registered Sexual Predator at our child’s school and there is nothing we can do about it! What a slap in the face!
We tell our children to beware of this man, but now we have to tell them, well, except at school? This is where we have taught them to respect and trust the adults. They don't think of anyone inside their school as a stranger or someone they cannot trust!
Don't children have the right, first and foremost, to safely receive an education?
This is the letter I wrote to our Board Of Education, Sheriff's Department, Chief of Police, City Council and others.
